Amalfi Coast, Sorrento & Positano

One of the highlights of the cruise was getting to dock on the world-famous Amalfi Coast. Compared to the hectic, run-and-gun tours of Florence and Rome, our visit here was very relaxed and pleasant as we really got to take our time and sight-see, enjoy the food, sip some coffee and people watch; the way the Italians love to do!

Amalfi Coast

Easily, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most incredible locales in all of Italy. And that’s saying a lot since almost every city in Italy has it’s own character and charm! What it lacks in history (Rome), art (Florence) and majesty (Venice), the Coast makes up for with sheer breath-taking beauty!

Sorrento

* The town of Sorrento, where many artists and poets have found love and inspiration throughout the centuries.

Sorrento

* Main square of Sorrento, with dozens of cafes, restaurants, gelato stalls and creperies.

Sorrento Cafe

* That kind of bold advertising claim DESERVES a shot! "Because you haven’t had Cappuccino, until you have had some in Sorrento….". To this day, my benchmark for Cappuccinos!

Sorrento

* Exploring the narrow streets containing stores with very good prices. Check out the creepy looking dude / mannequin on the balcony-area of the building on the left!

Amalfi Coast

* Very cool rock formations along the Coast. Somehow, i’m reminded of Jurassic Park.

Amalfi Coast

* I thought Filipino drivers were the best in the world but Italians are just INSANE. Imagine speeding down a two-way road with a wall of stone on one side and a hundred foot drop in the other. People here do not know how to use their brakes!

Amalfi Coast

* Italian version of a sari-sari store, selling citrus fruits, nuts, olives, lemons and Limoncello, 60 proof lemon-flavored liqueur that is very sweet.

Positano

* The village of Positano, which was featured in the movies: Only You (with Robert Downey Jr & Marisa Tomei) and Under the Tuscan Sun, is just… WOW.

Positano

* The tourist trade is Positano’s major industry. For some reason, all the hot chicks of the Mediterranean were here that day.

Condom Machine

* Yes, that is a vending machine for condoms. Why the hell would you need 16 different variants?!

Positano

* Down-hill stroll along Positano’s winding streets. Prepare to get an exercise when walking around the town!

Positano Vendor

*A paint vendor selling “original” Italian art work.. much like the ones in Greenhills and Market! Market!.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

* The Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its plaza in front, is a nice break from all the shops, cafes and restaurants in the area.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

* The church features a 13th century Byzantine icon of a Black Madonna.

According to local legend, the icon had been stolen from Byzantium and was being transported by pirates across the Mediterranean. A terrible storm had blown up in the waters opposite Positano and the frightened sailors heard a voice on board saying “Posa, posa!” (“Put down! Put down!”). The precious icon was unloaded and carried to the fishing village and the storm abated. (Thank You Wikipedia!)

Amalfi Coast

* View of the whole town with all the yachts up front. So this is what it’s like to breathe fresh air!

Amalfi Coast

* A final view of Positano.. So happy to have seen you! Hope to see you again some day!
